You’ve been posting on Instagram for your wedding business but your follower count has barely moved.
Your first thought is that your Instagram content is not working.
But that’s not necessarily the case.
The follower count is the one number sitting at the top of your profile like a scoreboard, so it’s the one we all check first. But it tells you very little about whether Instagram is doing its job for your wedding business.
Instagram isn’t a follower platform anymore. It’s a discovery platform.
I’ve gone deeper on this topic in my blog on why chasing followers is the wrong goal for wedding businesses.
In a nutshell, its role is to get you found by the right couples, keep you visible, and give them a feel for who you are before they ever fill out your enquiry form.
So, if you’re wondering whether your Instagram is working for your wedding business, then stop looking at the follower count and answer these five questions you need to ask instead.
And most of them are hiding in your insights, where only you can see them.
If you’re reaching people who don’t follow you then this is a good sign.
Open the insights on a recent post and look at who saw it. If a good chunk of those views came from non-followers, Instagram is putting you in front of new people. That’s discovery working.
Getting discovered in the Instagram scroll by searching brides ad
This matters because your followers mostly don’t see your posts anyway. Socialinsider’s research puts the average post in front of roughly 4 to 7% of an account’s follower count. The couples who haven’t found you yet are the ones you want.
A lot of that comes from search. Couples type things like ‘barn wedding Cotswolds’ or ‘wedding florist Yorkshire’ into that little magnifying glass, and the bots scanning your captions, on-screen text and location tags decide whether you come up. Keyword-rich content can even get picked up by Google, so your Instagram can show up outside Instagram too.
A share is gold. A bride-to-be sees your post, and it goes straight to her other half… ‘this is what I’m thinking, what do you reckon?’
That one tap tells Instagram she’s interested in this kind of thing, so she’ll see more of it, and more of you. It also means your content was useful or beautiful enough to pass on, which is a far better sign than a like.
Saves tell you something just as valuable. Couples use Instagram like a planning mood board, saving posts into collections… venues, flowers, dresses, the photographer whose style they love. They’re building inspiration they’ll come back to when it’s time to make decisions.
So when someone saves your post, you’ve made it into their wedding plans. And every time they go back to that collection, there you are again.
Check the shares and saves on each post. If certain topics or formats get sent more than others, make more of them.
Views are one thing. Staying is another.
On reels, look at your watch time and skip rate. Are people sticking with you, or scrolling off in the first second? If they’re staying longer than they used to, your hooks are landing and your content is holding attention.
On carousels, it’s the same idea. Are people swiping through to the last slide? If they are, Instagram reads that as a sign your content is worth showing to more people.
Every piece of content tells one tiny part of your story. A profile visit means that one post made someone curious enough to go and find out what you’re all about.
This is the moment your profile has to do the heavy lifting. Your bio should say what you do and where you do it within a couple of seconds. Your grid should show you, not only your work. People buy from people, and couples want to see the person who’ll be at their wedding.
It also matters when couples find you somewhere else first. A directory, a Google search, a recommendation over coffee… whichever way they found you, they’ll come and check your Instagram before they enquire. If your last post was six months ago, they’ll start wondering if you’re even still taking bookings.
This is the big one. Link taps show how many people went from your profile to your website.
Your link in bio is the bridge between the two. Most couples don’t want to jump straight into your DMs. They want to have a proper look around in their own time, check your pricing and read a bit more about you. That happens on your website, and most enquiries come through a website form or an email, not a DM.
So make that bridge easy to cross. Your website should be the first link, not buried six links down a crowded link page. And when a couple lands there, it should look and sound like the same person they just fell for on Instagram.
If your link taps are creeping up month on month, your Instagram is sending couples exactly where you want them. It just doesn’t always get the credit.
None of these five signs show up on the front of your profile. Nobody else can see your saves, your profile visits or your link taps. They only see your follower count (and your likes and views, if you have those settings turned on).
And people are lazy (me included). Leaving a comment takes effort. So a post with a handful of likes might have been seen by hundreds of new people, sent to a few partners, and nudged a couple of couples over to your website.
That’s Instagram doing its job.
I’m Zoe from Zoe Loves Creating and, like Amber, I work with wedding businesses, but just on the Instagram piece of the marketing puzzle. I’m an Instagram strategist for wedding professionals, helping brilliant wedding pros like you get a brilliant Instagram that gets you found and gets you booked.
If you’ve read this far and you’re still not sure whether your Instagram is working, I want you to know that’s completely normal. Most wedding pros I speak to are posting and hoping, then checking the follower count and feeling rubbish about it.
So I made a quiz for wedding pros to find out if their Instagram is working (or not). It takes a few minutes and shows you where your Instagram is at. And to make it a bit of fun it will tell you what celebrity wedding your Instagram is channeling. Is it one that’s built to last, or one that was doomed before the confetti even settled? Go and find out.
If you’d rather have someone else look at it properly, my Instagram review and audit for wedding businesses gives you a proper look at what’s working and what needs to change.
How do I know if my wedding business Instagram is working? Look past the follower count. Check whether you’re reaching non-followers, getting shares and saves, holding attention on reels and carousels, and getting more profile visits and link taps to your website.
Why isn’t my follower count growing? Instagram now shows your content to people based on what they’re interested in, not who they follow. Plenty of couples will find you, check you out and enquire without ever pressing follow. You just need to know how to optimise your content to reach these couples.
Where do I find these numbers? Tap Professional dashboard under your bio for your overall insights, or open any post and tap View insights to see how that one performed.
